Elite runners and professional triathletes make up a minority of our population. Most people are like me with little to no athletic background, who want to lose weight and become more active. After working for several years and starting a family, I found myself overweight and out of shape. I wanted to set a better example for my children by showing them a healthy lifestyle is important and that it can be done no matter how busy you are; if you make it a priority. I wanted to live long enough to see them grow up and enjoy the families they would start. I decided to change everything in my life. I ate better and joined Endurance Reno to become active. Are you training alone?

If you’re an amateur or professional, there’s nothing different about training alone, except for how fast you go! There are however, countless similarities between both levels of athletes that are the same when training alone.  Let’s take a look at five key points and why it may be to your benefit to join a professional coached and managed team.

1. Motivation – As a former professional endurance athlete, I know the daily demands it takes to reach your potential in running, cycling and in the sport of triathlon.  As you decide that you want to finish your next event faster than your previous, get on the podium or qualify for the next big event, it gets more and more challenging to keep your motivation at the required level to do so.

I work with athletes all the time who have different kinds of goals, from weight loss, to starting out at 15-minute mile pace, to elite athletes.  No matter where you are, motivation will be tough to muster up as time goes on.

2. Accountability –  Who are you accountable to when you are training alone?  Yourself.  Some days are better than others, we all know that, but when you fall in to a phase of training where accountability is low, your motivation will certainly be affected for the worse.  Speaking from personal experience, I recall when I was training alone at different times of my professional career and how difficult it was to do, versus having a team of athletes or a coach to keep me accountable!

3. Effort Level –  How hard should you be training? That’s a good question and most athletes aren’t sure of the answer.  They usually push themselves in training, based on how they are feeling that day, with no regard to many other factors that we will discuss in another post, which leads us to point number four.

4. Unknown – You can take all the unknown guess-work out of your daily training by hiring the right coach.  Of the athletes and teams that I coach, everyone knows what they should be doing daily so there is NO guessing.  Each athlete is trained based on their annual primary goal(s).  One of the worst feelings you can have as a new or experienced athlete, is that feeling of the “unknown”.  Many professionals who try to “do it alone” end up unsure if their training was adequate for the next event they are registered for!

5. Safety – Even though safety is the most important of these 5 key points, it is often a point that is overlooked.  When you are training with EnduWorld you are always in a group.  Drivers can see a large group much easier than a solo runner or cyclist out on the open road.  If something goes wrong on the road, you always have a teammate to help you.

Training is meant to be fun and so is racing or achieving your personal goals that you have set out for yourself.  Even though training alone is enjoyable occasionally, training alone every day can make it more difficult to reach your personal goals.  If you want to hire a coach to help you or learn how you can become a part of our team, contact us today.

Luck, Leprechauns and Lots of Lovely Run Records!

“Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity,” Lucius Annaeus Seneca once said.

Endurance Sparks athletes showed that they were prepared to do great things when given the opportunity at The Lucky Run in Davis, California last weekend.  Don Goodballet had a strong showing in his first race of the season, running the 7 mile race in 1:01:44.  Courtney Goodballet blazed to a new personal best in the half marathon, running an outstanding time of 1:48:31.  Congratulations on the great races Don and Courtney! E-Team Takes Over Northern California!

EnduWorld Athletes from Endurance Reno and Sparks, Nevada showed that hard training pays off! Last weekend athletes competed in races ranging from the 5k distance to the Marathon (26.2 miles!).

First up was the Bidwell Classic Half Marathon in Chico, California, where Endurance Reno had four athletes place in the top 16.  E-team elite runner Lupe Cabada set an enormous two-minute personal best (Thanks to his new Asics Racing Flats!), finishing 2nd overall (by .01 seconds!) in 1:09:20.  This is an astounding 5:17 pace for 13.1 miles and is just the beginning of how fast Lupe can run.  Huge congratulations, Lupe!  Mannie Calderon finished first in his age group and 7th overall with a very respectable time of 1:21:56.  Look for Mannie to do amazing things in his next Marathon on April 13 at our local Downtown River Run sponsored by DolanAutoGroup, Reno Running and Fitness and presented by American Family Insurance.

Endurance Reno female Sarah Raitter finished 11th overall and 3rd female in a time of 1:24:57.  Come back to read more posts at about Sarah, who is preparing for the upcoming Boston Marathon.  Sarah just received amazing news that she will be starting in the Elite field in the Boston Marathon!  That’s a big accomplishment for a 40+ female runner from Reno! Gil Calderon ran 1:27:05, good enough for 16th overall and 2nd in his age group.  Gil is a newer runner doing amazing things and preparing for the Downtown River Run Marathon too.  Danny Heinsohn ran an excellent race, coming across the line in 1:33:47 as he prepares for Ironman Idaho in June.

After an amazing pre-race dinner provided by the equally amazing Shanna Contreras (Coach Will’s wife), E-Team’ers set out to blaze through either the Napa Valley Marathon or the accompanying Kiwanis 5k.  Ron Young led the charge in the marathon by placing 6th overall in a time of 2:38:14, all while entertaining the crowds with his best zombie impression.  Jaime Cabada came in next in a fantastic time of 2:58:05. Believe it or not, this was Jaime’s debut marathon and he ran a smart race and posted a Boston Marathon Qualifying time!  Coach Will ran with Sam Baugh the whole race and pushed him.  Sam Baugh showed his toughness with a six-minute personal best, running 3:35:36. Way to go on the new PR, Sam!

Kristin Stith and Stefan Precup also ran their debut marathon in Napa and proved that they are both meant for the distance.  Kristin came in with a time of 3:54:35 and Stefan covered the distance in 3:56:07.  Great first marathons Kristin and Stefan!  The next E-

team’er to cross the line was Diana Jones, in an awesome debut marathon time of 4:22:09.  Diana proved that she can truly do anything she sets out to do!  Olivia Baugh paced and helped Diana along her first marathon and demonstrated both her physical and mental toughness by finishing in 4:22:10, despite nursing a hip injury and illness.  Olivia is the true definition of a team player and will certainly run a personal best of sub 3:30 when healthy!


Debby Bullentini crossed an item off her “bucket list” by finishing her debut 26.2 in 4:28:20.  Debby was all smiles throughout the course and ran strong the entire way.  So proud of you, Debby!   Corrine Casanova crossed the line next, conquering the course in a great time of 4:37:35, which was her 2nd fastest performance ever at Napa and her 12th Marathon finish!  Nick Jones looked

super strong as he picked up the pace the last 400 meters of the race to finish his debut marathon in a time of 5:14:09.  Excellent debut, Nick!


Endurance Reno athletes also showed their dominance in the Kiwanis 5k that same morning.  Casey Keen continued to impress with a 10th place finish and personal record time of 18:53.  This was good enough for 2nd in Casey’s age group (40-49). Derrick Foster finished 5th in his age group in a time of 22:31.  Chelsea Keen improved her 5k time to a 25:54, finishing 3rd in her age group.  Brenda Larson completely annihilated her personal best in the 5k, improving by over two minutes to run a 30:18, which was good for 4th in her age group.  Fantastic job to all 5k runners!

What’s up next?  Endurance Sparks athletes Don and Courtney Goodballet and Craig Manning show their stuff at the Lucky Run in Davis, California on March 8 (TODAY!).  Don is running the Lucky 7 Miler.  Courtney and Craig are both doing the Lucky Half Marathon.  Look for great things from all three of these amazing athletes!  And if you haven’t already, make sure to register for the 2014 RENO 5000 Running Series HERE, starting with the Downtown River Run on April 13.  You won’t find a better race series out there!

President’s Day Race Results

The Double Duathlon- Folsom Lake SRA- February 15

Brynda Searing and Karen Jessop kicked off the President’s Day racing with stellar performances at the Double Duathlon in Folsom, California. Brynda finished 3rd place in her age group with an overall time of 2:12:54, while Karen finished in an excellent time of 2:30:29. Way to compete ladies—so proud of you both!
