Hello endurance athletes! While many people were staying inside through the cold and dark month of January, Endurance Reno and Endurance Sparks athletes were busy storming the podium and training hard to run personal bests in 2014. January is typically a low-key racing month, but several E-Team’ers kicked off the new year with some excellent performances anyway.
Pete Rissler started 2014 off with a blazing fast 19:52 at the New Year’s Day 5k in Fallon. This was good for 6th place overall. Way to go, Pete! A solid group of Reno/Sparks athletes traveled to Redding, California for the Redding Marathon Relay on January 19. This is a 3-person relay, with the first leg running 9.6 miles, leg 2 running 9.4 miles, and the final leg running 7.2 miles. Team Endurance Reno (Lupe Cabada, Sarah Raitter, and Jaime Cabada) won the relay and set a new course record of 2:34:15. Team D-Generation X, comprised of E-Team athletes Mannie Calderon and Gil Calderon (along with Reno racing legend Charlie Johnston) also broke the previous course record by finishing in third place in a time of 2:36: 16.
Superbowl weekend saw several Endurance Reno and Endurance Sparks athletes racing and running well. Patty Favela competed in the Arizona Rock and Roll half marathon and ran a fantastic time of 1:40:12. Patty has been on fire lately…look for more big things from her in 2014 J Jill Ryan-Holden also competed at the Surf City half marathon on February 2 and posted an excellent time of 2:02:34. Great work, Jill! The always-tough Calderon brothers both competed at the Super Sunday run in Sacramento on February 2. Mannie Calderon set a huge new 10k personal best with a 35:12, good for 6th place overall. Gil Calderon also blazed through a new 5k personal best in 17:49, which placed him 4th overall. More personal bests to come for these two for sure!
Despite some gnarly weather this past weekend, a few Endurance Sparks athletes set personal bests at the Davis Stampede in Davis, California. Craig Manning set a 4-minute personal best in the half marathon with a time of 1:39:22. Amazing job, Craig! Lisa Jones also set a fantastic new PR in the half marathon with a time of 2:08:19. A little rain can’t stop these tough E-Teamers! The Calderon brothers showed their strength by racing again at the Running Red for Heart 5k in Sparks. Mannie finished second overall with a 16:43 and Gil finished third overall with a 17:46. Another strong weekend for both of them!
What’s up next? Liz O’Neal is ready to tear it up at the Austin Marathon this weekend. Also, look for E-Team athletes to take over the podium at the “You’ve Gotta Be Crazy Run” in Verdi on Sunday Feb. 16.
Happy Running Everyone!
